I'm not one to normally rant on my blog, but an article in the New York Times gave me another reason to despise the overly produced "Keep Calm and Carry On" posters. Other than the fact that this annoying slogan can now be found on everything from shirts, rugs, deck chairs and practically anything else where a slogan could be placed thanks to the numerous Etsy sellers and other online shops (so much for creativity!), it turns out that the history behind the slogan is less than calming..."The British propaganda office created a series of three posters. The others were ?Freedom is in peril, defend it with all your might? and ?Your courage, your cheerfulness, your resolution will bring us victory.? The government plastered Britain with those two posters. But it held back ?Keep calm? for even more upsetting circumstances.
?The plan was, it was to be displayed and it was to go up if Germany ever invaded,? Mr. Coop said."
So the real message of this poster was to tell the citizens to basically submit to the Nazi's, should they invade Britain, which went completely against what their first two posters stated.
