Modern Furniture Inspired by Science

Whether scientists are studying an organ, a cell, or a chemical compound, they analyze the structure of that particular subject and its properties. Seeing as how the many facets of science focus on the design of any one object, it makes perfect sense for someone to become inspired and develop a piece of furniture or d�cor around this idea. Interior design combines the eloquence of art and the technicality of science in order to form a unique piece of furniture, but what happens when we take a literal approach to the world of home design?

Joris Laarman designed this chair based on the way bones grow. Dezeen explains that the Bone Chair "mimics the way that growing bones are able to generate additional material where it is needed, but also to remove material where it is superfluous, by making the bone thinner or hollow."


Joel Escalona's MYDNA Bookcase was inspired by the spiral, rotating structure of DNA.


M�ns Salomonsen, a Swedish designer at HDK Steneby created the Pulseline bookshelf that is coated with fluorescent paint on the outer rim allowing it to glow in the dark.
